R. Obayashi
I have been teaching for over 10 years and I believe that the new funding model may decide how effectively I can teach for the rest of my career.
This page contains a summary of my major issues and concerns of the new funding model. I have also included my letter to John Horgan. As of February 2020, we have had over 2300 unique visitors to this website. I want to just thank everyone personally for taking the time to educate themselves and for sharing this website. This is a time for celebration, but also a time to continue to push forward. This government is clearly willing to listen as long as we continue to speak up. Please continue to advocate for increased funding to BC education. |
My summary
The link below is our personal summary of all the information. This includes a timeline, a summary of the new "Prevalence" model, possible issues, and what you can do.
My major issues after the delay of the prevalence model.
1) The prevalence model or population based funding has been delayed, but can still be implemented in the next 3 years. We need to continue to push to get rid of this terrible funding model.
2) Both BCTF and the government have on their websites that BC is ranked second lowest in national funding per student. We need to push not only to at least reach the national average, but BC should be one of the leaders in Canada. 3) Adult/Continuing education is being funded approximately 36% less. Studies have shown the importance of continued education and how it helps to decrease unemployment and help families get out of poverty. NDP has acknowledged this and made adult/continuing education apart of the budget. However adult/continuing education programs are continuing to shrink or be eliminated. We need to fund them properly if we want to allow them to grow and help our communities. |
My letter to John Horgan
Our eventual goal is to get as many people to contact the NDP government to hopefully make a change. My district does not have NDP MLA, so I directed my email to John Horgan.
